Delores Agan passed from this life to the great bridge game in heaven on February 18, 2014. She was born Kathryn Delores Johnson near Chariton, IA, on September 25, 1923, to Fred and Blanche (Summy) Johnson. She was raised in Chariton and graduated from Chariton High School with the Class of 1941. While in school Delores was a member of the National Honor Society and the Iowa State Champion Junior Legion Band.
After graduation Delores accepted a position as a legal assistant at the law firm of Leo Hoegh, an Iowa State Representative who would later become the 33rd Governor of the State of Iowa in 1954. Delores was very proud that her working career allowed her to buy a home for her widowed mother and younger brother. The family had been devastated by the sudden death of her father in 1939.
On Christmas Eve 1942 Delores met Duane Agan, a farmer from Columbia. They continued dating and were married on March 31, 1945. Delores was a hard working farm wife and mother and together she and Duane raised three children in the Columbia, Iowa area. Delores returned to the workplace with Johnson Machine Works from 1963 to 1968, and later served as office manager for the family business.
In retirement Delores and Duane traveled extensively and enjoyed a winter home in Phoenix, Arizona, for nearly 20 years. After Duane’s passing in 1995, Delores continued to travel and spend winters in the south.
Delores was a very social person and loved to dance, bowl, and play cards her entire life. While she enjoyed the competition of any card game, Delores truly loved playing bridge, and she was good at it. Many times she proudly shared with family when she had been high point person at her weekly bridge club gathering. Fortunately, she was able to continue this love of bridge until the last few weeks of her life.
Delores was extremely proud of her family. She enjoyed a wonderful 90th birthday party in September with family and friends. Delores was preceded in death by her parents and her husband. She is survived by her brother Dennis (Barb) Johnson of Renton, Washington, daughter Sherry (Jim) Sharp of Indianola, sons Craig (Pat) and Chris (Audrey) Agan of Knoxville.
Adoring grandchildren include Barry (Colleen) Sharp of Rogers, MN., Brent (Mary) Sharp, Beth (Andy) Adamcik, Jon (Naomi) Agan, Bret Agan, and Bleu Agan of Knoxville, IA., and Ashley (Ryan) Bassett of Attica, IA, along with ten great grandchildren, and one great-great grandson.
