James A. Holt, age 84, of Knoxville, passed away Tuesday, April, 16, 2013, at the Mercy Medical Center of Des Moines, Iowa.
James was born in Henderson, Iowa, on October 11, 1928, the only child of Claude Harlo and Rogene Carol (Skank) Holt. James was raised in Henderson and graduated from Henderson High School.
On January 21, 1949, in Council Bluffs, Iowa, James and Patricia Mae Melendy were united in marriage. They shared over 64 years of marriage and were blessed with four children: Pam, Sherry, Jeff and Joy.
James worked with the Natural Gas Pipeline Company of North America from 1954 to 1969 in Texarkana, Arkansas and from 1969 until his retirement in Knoxville. James worked with the natural gas pipeline company for 40 years.
James was very proud and honored to have served his country in the Iowa Army National Guard. He was the oldest Iowan deployed during Desert Storm. James retired from the National Guard, as a Staff Sergeant, after 20 years of service.
James enjoyed several hobbies including pen making, woodworking, gardening and he loved nature, especially planting trees. He was also a Lionís Club member for 31 years and a former member of the Regular Baptist Church
James is survived by his wife of 64 years Patricia of Knoxville; their four children: Pam (Ron) Meriweather of Oskaloosa, Sherry (Gary) Smith of Knoxville, Jeff Holt of Knoxville and Joy (Rick) Van Donsler of Knoxville; eight grandchildren: Jeff Smith, Jeremy Smith, Ryan Van Donsler, Joel Van Donsler, Casey Van Donsler, Leanne Mitchell, Amy Cardoza and Christy Dykstra; and eleven great-grandchildren: Payten Smith, Haley Smith, Addie Binns, Greg Street, Emma Street, Katie Cardoza, Elizabeth Cardoza, Mark Dykstra, Sam Dykstra, Patience Dykstra and Lisa Dykstra. He was preceded in death by his parents: Claude and Rogene Holt.
Funeral services for James will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, April 20, 2013, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Burial with military honors will follow services at Graceland Cemetery of Knoxville.
Visitation for James will begin at 11:00 a.m., Friday, April 19, 2013, at the Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville. Jamesí family will be present from 6 to 8:00 p.m., Friday evening at the funeral home.
A memorial has been established in Jamesí name to the Knoxville Fire and rescue of Knoxville. Condolences may be sent to The Winfield Funeral Home of Knoxville is assisting the family with arrangements.
