Shalmer Lynn Avitt, 92, of Knoxville, passed away December 22, 2011. He was born to Ralph H. and Marie (Chow) Avitt on April 7, 1919, in Lucas County on the family farm.
Shalmer graduated from Chariton High School and later enlisted in the Army on October 28, 1942. He served his country during WWII in Sicilian, Naples, Foggia, Rome, Arno Southern France Rhineland. He earned the Good Conduct Medal, World War II Victory Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Theater Ribbon with silver battle star service stripe, and five Overseas Service Bars.
Shalmer was married to Argentine “Jean” (Giroud) July 7, 1945 and they had three children: Josiann, Bernie, and Bob. Shalmer worked at the V.A. Hospital, Safeway Truck Lines, and 3M Company. He was a member of the Masonic Oriental Lodge #61, V.F.W., and the American legion, Baty-Tucker Post 168.
Shalmer is survived by his wife Jean; son Bernie (Marilynn); son Bob (Pat); grandchildren: Tim (Betty) Collins, Bryan (Kim) Avitt, Stacey (Scott) Bacorn, Greg (Laura) Avitt, Lindsey (Phil) Latessa; great grandchildren are Tara, Tristan and Brittany Bacorn; Grace and Ben Avitt; Lauren Ashley, Taylor, Rebecca Collins; and Katherine and Robert Walters. Shalmer was preceded in death by his parents; brother, Eudean Avitt; and daughter, Josie.
