Gordon Howard Brown, age 82, of Linton, formerly of Columbia, South Carolina, passed away at 10:42 P.M. Sun., Jan. 29, 2006, at Select Specialty in Bloomington. He was born Sept. 23, 1923, in Franklin, the son of Fred Edgar & Georgia Diana (Nichols) Brown.
He was a Navy veteran on the USS Hornet in the Pacific during WW II.
He attended the University of New Hampshire and received his Bachelors in Biology, then attended Virginia Polytechnical Institute to receive his Masters in Wildlife Management.
He began working for the South Carolina Department of Wildlife in Columbia, SC for approximately 17 years, during which time he worked as a Director of the Conservation Camp, a photographer for the Sandlapper Magazine & the Carolina Wildlife Magazine, and had a television show on hunting & fishing. He then worked for the University of South Carolina in the Institute of Archeology as a photographer for approximately 18 years. He later worked at the McKissick Museum as the in house photographer for approximately 20 years.
He was a member of Sertoma in Columbia, SC, and frequently participated in the Columbia, SC Town Theatre both as an actor and photographer.
Survivors include a daughter, Shelley Williams & husband Tom, of Linton, a son, Matthew Brown, of Columbia, SC, five grandchildren, Melissa Dolak, Brad Dolak, Andy Brown, Troy Brown, & Scott Brown, two great-grandchildren, and four nieces.
He was preceded in death by a son, Rick Brown, a brother, Sheldon Brown & his parents.
A private family memorial service will be held at a later date. Welch & Cornett Funeral Home Linton Chapel is in charge of arrangements. There will be no visitation at the funeral home.
The family suggests that memorial donations be made to the Margaret Cooper Public Library Building Fund because of his love of books & knowledge.
