Mary Dean Allen Sawyer, 90, of 916A Sandy Hook Road, Shiloh, NC died Thursday, November 5, 2009, at Albemarle Hospital, Elizabeth City. Born in Beaufort County, NC, she was the seventh child of eight to the late Jesse Hyman Allen and the late Matilda Stokesberry Allen and was the widow of Charlie Raymond Sawyer. Mrs. Sawyer was a 1937 graduate of Pantego High School and a grocery store owner in Shiloh for many years. She loved to play bingo and she loved flowers, roses being her favorite. Mrs. Sawyer was a cancer survivor of twenty-one years and was a member of Shiloh Baptist Church.
Mrs. Sawyer is survived by her daughters, Miriam S. Alexander and her husband Donald of Elizabeth City, Vickie S. Burgess and husband Aubrey of Shiloh, and Charlene Smith and husband Elvis of Elizabeth City; six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and one great grandchild who’s arrival is greatly anticipated. Along with her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her sisters, Lucy Vaughn, Evelyn Harris, Rosa Allen, and Blanche Allen; and her brothers, Ira Allen, Norwood Allen, and Edmond Allen. The family would like to extend special thanks to Needham Adult Care Home where the staff made Mary Dean feel like a part of the family. Their love and care allowed her to remain independent.
A memorial service will be held on Sunday, November 8, 2009 at 2:30 p.m. at Twiford’s Memorial Chapel with Pastor John Wolford, III officiating. The family will receive friends immediately following the service in the lobby of the funeral home and at other times at the residence of Mr. and Mrs. Aubrey Burgess, 938 Sandy Hook Road, Shiloh, NC. Flowers would be greatly appreciated; however, contributions in Mary Dean’s memory may be made to Needham Adult Care Home, 916A Sandy Hook Road, Shiloh, NC 27974.
