Poughkeepsie - Frieda H. Cashman, 96, a local resident for over thirty years and previously of Long Island and New City, died on Saturday, October 24, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center. Frieda, fluent in four languages, worked as a hostess in Swiss Hotels for twelve years. It was at one of the hotels that she met Wilfred Cashman, an American soldier whom she would eventually marry. During her youth in Switzerland, she enjoyed doing gymnastics with her siblings in the local gymnastics club and helping the local farmers in the fields. Mrs. Friedman was a member of the Busy Hands Knitting Club, and a communicant of St. Mary's Church in Poughkeepsie. Born in St. Margaret, Switzerland on September 6, 1913, she was the daughter of the late Joseph and Lydia Gasser Steiner. On July 19, 1947 at St. Peter's Church in New York City, she married Wilfred Cashman. He predeceased her on September 12, 2001. Survivors include many nieces and nephews in Switzerland, and many friends at the Manor at Woodside in Poughkeepsie. In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by seven brothers and four sisters, all of Switzerland. There are no calling hours. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am on Tuesday October 27, 2009 at St. Mary's Church, Poughkeepsie. Msgr. John Brinn will officiate. Burial will follow in Lakewood Cemetery, Cooperstown, NY. Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Hyde Park.
