| | | Poughkeepsie - John R. Jack Lee Jr., 94, a longtime area resident and previously of Point Pleasant, NY, died Wednesday, October 21, 2009 at home.
Jack was an engineer for IBM in Poughkeepsie for forty years until his retirement in 1975. While at IBM, he was proud to be part of the team responsible for making the tools for manufacturing the first generation of typewriters and computers.
Following IBM, he became head of security and phone systems at St. Francis Hospital for eleven years until his ultimate retirement in 1989.
Mr. Lee was a charter member and the first Fire Captain of the Croft Corners Fire Dept. in 1951, and a member of the 110 Gun Club from 1945 to 1960. He was also a former member and officer of the IBM Quarter Century Club; and the IBM Retirees Club, where he served as secretary from 1990 to 2000.
An athletic person, Jack was a pitcher in the IBM Fast Pitch Softball League (and 'C' League MVP in 1962), and he bowled in IBM Bowling Leagues from 1945 to 1999, namely the 'Wednesday Night Major League" at Mardi-Bob Lanes in Poughkeepsie. He also played in IBM Golf Leagues, and the IBM Dart Ball League (through which he received the Edward Ruger Senior Memorial Award in 1991).
He served in the U.S. Army combat infantry during World War II, and had received the American Service Medal, Asiatic-Pacific Service Medal, European-African-Middle Eastern Service Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
Born in Point Pleasant, NY on August 16, 1915, he was the son of the late John R. Lee Sr. and Anna Wimble Lee. He graduated from Rochester Institute of Technology with a Bachelors Degree in Engineering.
On July 27, 1940 in St. Salome's Church in Point Pleasant, he married Marion A. Dailey. Mrs. Lee survives in Poughkeepsie.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, John W. Lee and wife, Maria, of Poughkeepsie; daughter, Jacqueline Jordan of Reno, NV; four grandchildren, Salvatore, Brian, Sean, and Danielle; sister, Katherine Bush of Rochester, NY; brother, Charles Lee and wife, Alice, of Rochester; and several nieces and nephews.
He was predeceased by a son, Norman C. Lee; and two sisters, Harriet and Margaret.
There are no calling hours
In keeping with his wishes, cremation has taken place.
Graveside services with military honors will take place at 11 am, Friday, October 23, 2009 in the family plot at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Fr. Armand Padula will be officiating.
