  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Italo Benin passed away on September 30, 2009 at Thompson House, Rhinebeck NY, with his son by his side. Italo was born near Venice, Italy on December 28, 1936 and loved all things Italian: music, opera, literature, art, fine food and wine. He received his doctorate in Philosophy from the Lateran University in Rome in 1963. Dr. Benin taught in Rome, Switzerland, England, Malaysia, Georgia, and finally spent 27 years teaching Philosophy at Marist College in Poughkeepsie, retiring in 1994.
Italo was a devoted and caring husband to his wife of 38 years, Sharon Tervenski Benin. He was also a proud and loving father to their son, Michael Louis Benin.
Italo will be very much missed by his family in Toronto, Anna and Frank Gougeon, Roy and Jacqueline Benin and Rina Benin. He will also be missed by his large family in Italy, Guido and Ines Benin, Livia and Lino De Benetti, Maria and Nino Giacetti, Luigi and Pierina Benin, and Bruna and Luigino Cavasin, Maria Benin, Tulia Benin, Angelo Calcagni as well as many cousins, nieces and nephews including Beppino, Monica, Sabrina, Raphaela and Manuela. He was predeceased by Gina, Bruno, Mario, and Romeo, all siblings.
He will also be very much missed by his American family, brother and sister-in-law, Brian and Joanne Tervenksi, and his niece and nephew, Elizabeth and David Tervenski.
Italo was an athlete excelling at tennis, swimming, and racquetball, a daily participant of Mike Arteaga’s Health and Fitness Center, and a 20 year member of the Hyde Park Swim and Tennis Club. He was an avid gardener, a political enthusiast, and a fan of film, particularly foreign. In retirement he volunteered at Meals on Wheels, Hospice, and the Lifetime Learning Institute at Bard College. To Italo, teaching was an art, and his canvass was his lecture.
Many thanks to our many friends, family, colleagues and students who have offered their love and support during Italo’s quietly courageous battle with cancer, as well as the doctors, nurses and staff who have had Italo in their care during his long illness. Donations may be made to the American Cancer Society in Italo’s memory and in remembrance of many friends and family who are still battling this disease.
Friends and family may call from 4 to 7 pm, Saturday, October 3, 2009 at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park, and also are invited to sign the online registry with thoughts and remembrances at www.sweetsfuneralhome.com.
Italo has chosen to have his ashes scattered at a place where he spent many an evening enjoying sunsets with his wife, and their beloved Jack Russell Terrier, Sparky.
Italo was a kind and thoughtful man, a seeker of knowledge and spirit, whose love and presence will be very much missed.
