| | | Hyde Park - Eleanor D. McLaughlin, a lifelong area resident, died Thursday, September 10, 2009 in Poughkeepsie.
An elementary school teacher, Mrs. McLaughlin started her career with Wappingers schools before moving on to the Hyde Park Central School District, where she taught for many years until her retirement.
Eleanor was a member of the Dutchess Garden Study Club, past-president of the local chapter of the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, and past-president of the Business and Professional Women's Association. She was also a member of the Hyde Park Historical Society, Hyde Park Chapter of AARP, the Dutchess County Antique Study Club, and the NY State Retired Teachers' Association.
Mrs. McLaughlin travelled extensively through all seven continents.
Born in Washington, D.C., she was the daughter of the late George P. and Ellen H. Kearney Davis.
A graduate of Poughkeepsie High School and the Poughkeepsie Business Institute, she received her Bachelor’s Degree from the Pratt Institute School of Design and two Masters Degrees; one from the State University of NY at New Paltz and one from Columbia University.
She was predeceased by her husband, Edward J. McLaughlin.
Survivors include her brother, George J. Davis of Poughkeepsie; two daughters, Ellen Courtney and husband, Alec, of Glenmont, NY, and Edwina Marsala and husband, Don, of Poughkeepsie; three grandchildren, Captain Alexander A. Courtney III, USAF, of Great Falls, MT, William Davis Courtney of Boston, MA, and Karen Marsala of Manhattan; nephew, John Carroll and wife, Eppie, of Beltsville, MD; and cousin, Julia Nelson and husband, Don, of Poughkeepsie.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, September 13, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10am, Monday, September 14th at St. Joseph's Church, North Ave., Millbrook. Fr. James T. O'Connor will be officiating.
Burial will follow in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Millbrook.
