Hyde Park - John (Jack) W. Cullen, 92, a life-long area resident, died Wednesday, July 1, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center.
John was born on April 7, 1917 in Poughkeepsie, the son of the late John Mann and Marguerite Cullen Bennett.
Mr. Cullen graduated from St. Peters High School in Poughkeepsie. He served with distinction in the US Army during WW II in the Italy and North Africa arenas. He was awarded the American Service Medal, European/African/Middle Eastern Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal, and World War II Victory Medal.
He was retired from Prudential Insurance where during his career he was recognized as a top performer. After retiring, he managed his own painting contracting business that he took great pride in.
He was a member of Regina Coeli Church.
On December 15, 1946, he married Elizabeth (Betty) M. Senk at St. Peter's Church in Poughkeepsie. She was the love of his life, and they enjoyed every day of their 62 years together.
John loved to travel, dance with his wife to the big band sound, compose music, and spend time with his family.
He is survived by his wife, Betty, at Lutheran Care Center, Poughkeepsie; his son, Kevin, of Hyde Park and fiancé, Micky Rainieri; his daughter, Kathy Harlow, and her husband, David, of Hopewell Junction; his grandsons, Brent Harlow of Hoboken, NJ, and Ryan Harlow of Hopewell Junction; and several nieces and nephews.
Simply put, he was the best husband, father, and grandfather.
Visitation will be from 6-8 pm Thursday, July 9, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. A Memorial Service will be held at 7:30 pm during the visitation. Rev. James A. Garisto will officiate.
Services and burial will be private.
Memorial contributions can be made in his name to Lutheran Care Center, Resident's Fund, 965 Dutchess Turnpike, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
