| | | Saugerties - Frank James Guercio, 74, a longtime resident of Hyde Park and 15 year resident of Saugerties, passed away at home on Monday, May 18, 2009 with his wife Sally and his children at his side. He fought a courageous battle with brain cancer.
Frank and his brother, John, were self-employed in the family business, Guercio Construction, until they were recently taken away from each other with sickness. They loved and enjoyed their work in the Hyde Park and surrounding areas. He took great pride in the homes he built for so many wonderful people with whom he had the pleasure of enriching their lives. There wasn’t anything more important than doing what he loved, which was building, something his father taught him to be proud of.
He loved to fish and one of his favorite past-times was in the fall going to the St. Lawrence Seaway fishing with his brother, John, and his grandchildren. What amazing memories they all have. He was also a member of the Stone Church Fishing Club in Hyde Park.
Born December 14, 1934 in Brooklyn, he was the son of the late Philip and Sadie Picciotto Guercio.
He attended F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park and played soccer on his high school team. He served in the United States Army from 1955-1957. He also played on an army soccer team while he toured in Germany.
In June 1955, he married Sally Hassinger. Mrs. Guercio survives at home.
He is survived by six children whom he adored; daughter, Robin Stanziola and husband, Chris, of Staatsburg; son, Christopher Guercio and wife, Maryann, of Malta, Europe; daughter, Julie Pizzarelli and husband, Frank, of Poughkeepsie; son, Phillip Guercio and wife, Carla, of Hyde Park; daughter, Jennifer Torreggiani and husband, Alfred, of Hyde Park; daughter, Janine Spadaro of Hyde Park; and family member and friend, Randy Spadaro of Saugerties.
Frank’s grandchildren were very precious to him and he loved spending time with each and every one of them; Michele, Daniel, Abram, Sally, Al Jr., Sarah, Frank, Anna, Marissa, Nicholas, Taylor, Anthony and Nellie. He is also survived by his great granddaughter, Adriana.
Also surviving are several brothers and sisters, Joseph and wife, Gracie, of Florida; Rose Germano and husband, Robert, of Rhinebeck; Gracie Coratti and husband, Charlie, of Rhinebeck; Clara Cobey of Westchester; Benny and wife, Helen, of Canada; and Marlene Guercio of Rhinebeck.
His brother, John Guercio Sr. predeceased him in November 2008.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Friday, May 22, 2009 at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park, NY 12538.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Saturday, May 23rd, at Regina Coeli Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Entombment with military honors will follow in the Our Lady of the Holy Souls Mausoleum at St. Peter’s Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
