Poughkeepsie - Bertha Jora Coons, 88, a lifelong area resident, died at home in Poughkeepsie on Wednesday, April 22, 2009.
A homemaker for most of her life, Mrs. Coons worked for a time at the former "Pocketbook Factory" in Poughkeepsie during World War II.
Mrs. Coons was devoted to and proud of her family. Since her stroke in December 2004, she was lovingly cared for by her daughter, Roberta.
Born in Poughkeepsie on June 14, 1920, she was the daughter of the late William S. and Luceal M. Younghanse Wright. She attended Poughkeepsie Schools.
On June 8, 1946 in Poughkeepsie, she married the love of her life, Chester Edward Coons. He predeceased her on September 2, 1992.
She is survived by her four sons, William F. Wyant and wife, Dianna, of Dover Plains, Richard A. Wyant and wife, Brenda, of Hagerstown, MD, Carl W. Wyant and wife, Michelle, of West Virginia, and Charles J. (Chick) Wyant and companion, Beth Gephart, of Clinton Corners; three daughters, Marjorie B. Kelsey and companion, Skip, of Hudson, Jora A. Lizotte and husband, William, of Huntsville, AL, and Roberta Ure and husband, Alex, of Poughkeepsie; twenty-three grandchildren; twenty-four great grandchildren; and six great great grandchildren.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by a sister, Dorthy E. Lane; a granddaughter, Robin Bathrick; and daughter-in-law, Kay Wyant.
There are no calling hours.
Graveside services and burial will take place at 2 pm, Saturday, April 25, 2009 at Union Cemetery, Rte. 9G, Hyde Park. Rev. Thomas Hartley will be officiating.
Memorial donations may be made to the Hospice Foundation, 374 Violet Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12601.
Bertha's family would like to specially thank the nurses and staff of Hospice, especially Anna and Paula. We can't thank you enough for your love and kindness.
Arrangements are under the direction of Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
