Hyde Park - Eugene G. Mowris, 89, a longtime Hyde Park resident, died Sunday, April 5, 2009, at the Baptist Home in Rhinebeck.
Mr. Mowris worked at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center for thirty years until his retirement.
An avid outdoorsman, Gene enjoyed hunting and fishing, and tending to his vegetable and fruit garden. He also enjoyed raising tropical fish and racing sled dogs. He was a member of the North American Sled Dog Association.
Mr. Mowris served in the U.S. Army during World War II, and was a 50 year member of the John Livingston American Legion Post # 1466 in Poughkeepsie.
Born in Pine Plains on August 21, 1919, he was the son of the late Fred and Grace Scott Mowris.
On December 22, 1944 in Pine Plains, he married Katherine Winchell. Mrs. Mowris survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by a daughter, Genie Oles and husband, Clayton, of Hyde Park; three sons, Wesley Mowris of Hyde Park, Layne Mowris and wife, Sue, of Pleasant Valley, and Leo Mowris and wife, Joyce, of Coventry, NY; six grandchildren, Bonnie Ottilo, Clayton Oles and wife, Andrea, Earl Mowris, Shawn Mowris and companion, Amanda, Tory Mowris and companion, Crystal, and Chris Mowris; seven great grandchildren; and several nieces and nephews.
An hour of visitation will take place from 10 to 11 am, Wednesday, April 8, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park. The American legion will conduct services during the visitation.
A funeral service will follow at 11am at the funeral home. Pastor John R. Thomas of Tabernacle Baptist Church will be officiating.
Burial with military honors will be in the family plot in Evergreen Cemetery, Pine Plains.
Memorial donations may be made to the Baptist Home, 46 Brookmeade Dr., Rhinebeck, NY 12572.
