| | | Saugerties - Edward Schmaling Jr., 79, a Saugerties resident for the past eleven years and a former longtime Millbrook and Stanfordville resident, died Sunday, March 29, 2009 at home.
Ed was proud to be the second generation of his family run business, Schmaling Glass in Poughkeepsie. He was a glazier for over 50 years until his retirement.
He was an avid player and sponsor for several local softball leagues in the area during the 1970's and 80's.
Born in Poughkeepsie on February 26, 1930, he was the son of the late Edward Sr. and Dorothy Van Vlack Schmaling.
Ed was a graduate of F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park and he served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War.
Mr. Schmaling married Bernadette M. Hinchey. Mrs. Schmaling survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his son, Karl Schmaling and wife, Elizabeth, of Millbrook; three grandchildren, Kari, Kourtney,and Kristin Schmaling; and two step-children, Talia and Jason Hinchey, both of Catskill.
He was predeceased by his first wife, Roberta 'Bobbie' Buchanan Schmaling, in 1990, and his son, Kyle Schmaling, in 1979.
In keeping with Ed's wishes, cremation has taken place.
Memorial calling hours will be from 7 to 9 pm, Wednesday, April 1, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538.
