  VIEW/SEND CONDOLENCES

Poughkeepsie - Mary V. Smith, 91, a lifelong Poughkeepsie resident, died Sunday, March 22, 2009 at The Pines at Poughkeepsie. She was an entertainer for many years and is now singing and dancing with the stars. “Mom will be greatly missed. We are comforted knowing she is at peace in the arms of her sweet Jesus Christ.”
Devoting most of her life to her Lord Jesus Christ, she always put the needs of others before her own.
In Mary's later years, she devoted her life to doing volunteer work for veterans' organizations, the RSVP Program, the Cannon Street Senior Center, and the National Federation of the Blind.
Along with her Christian brother, Jimmy Callahan, deceased, and Christian friends, Mary would cook large pots of spaghetti and meatballs and the next day they would set up tables in the bowery passing out food to the street people. The children there affectionately called her "Grandma Ghetti."
She worked with shut-ins at the Hudson River Psychiatric Center with her dear friend, Mr. Piano. Mary was also awarded the "Giraffe Award."
Born in Poughkeepsie on July 26, 1917, Mary was a communicant of St. Joseph's Church in Poughkeepsie.
On June 28, 1936 in Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church, she married Clifford L. Smith. He predeceased her in 1976.
Survivors include her daughter, Valerie Smith of Hyde Park; son, Gary Smith and wife, Rose, of Hope Sound, FL; five grandchildren, David Koziol and wife, Sylvia, of San Jose, CA, Darleen Toth of Pleasant Valley, Gary Smith Jr. and wife, Donna, of Syracuse, Cindy Casper and husband, David, of Jacksonville, FL, and Jennifer DeFelice of New Hampshire; nine great grandchildren; sister, Elda Sinclair and husband, Larry, of Boca Raton, FL; cousins, Angie of Florida, and Carlo Deporto of Maryland; sisters-in-law, Edie Hart and husband, Charlie, of Stuart, FL, and Harriet Lake of Pleasant Valley; and brother-in-law, Bob DuBois of Poughkeepsie.
Calling hours will be from 6 to 8 pm, Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 9:30 am, Thursday, March 26th at Our Lady of Mt. Carmel Church in Poughkeepsie.
Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Joseph's Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
Memorial donations may be made to the National Federation of the Blind, 1800 Johnson Street, Baltimore, Maryland 21230.
Mary's family would like to thank Melinda, Sharon McCue, Carol Daugavietis, Georgia and Richard Burlingame, Mark Walley, and Toni for their love and care.
