Hyde Park - Kristine L. Oetjen, 56, a lifelong Hyde Park resident, died Saturday, March 21, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
Kris worked at Vassar Bros. Medical Center in the LDRP Unit as the guardian angel and caregiver for the mothers and babies. Previously, she was the owner and operator of the former Red Barn Delight and K & J Catering. She also worked for a time at Molloy Pharmacy in Hyde Park.
Kris was the first female firefighter and EMT for the Hyde Park Fire Dept. She was a life-member and received numerous commendations and awards for her service.
Kris enjoyed gardening, cooking, and doing crafts, especially ceramics. She also had a talent for baking cakes, and was often asked to bake birthday and wedding cakes for people.
Born in Poughkeepsie on January 3, 1953, she was the loving daughter of August A. 'Bud' Oetjen Jr. and Joan A. Joyce Oetjen. Her parents and maternal grandmother, Dorothy A. Joyce, all survive in Hyde Park.
She was a 1971 Graduate of F. D. Roosevelt High School in Hyde Park, and she completed the Cosmetology Program at Dutchess County BOCES.
Kris loved her family and was proud of the fact that she was part of five living generations.
In addition to her parents and maternal grandmother, she is survived by her two daughters, Janeen Sonnenberg and husband, Paul, of Pleasant Valley, and Jamie Day and husband, Michael, of Hyde Park; three grandchildren with whom she enjoyed spending time, Tyler and Trevor Sonnenberg, and Brianna Day; her longtime companion, the love of her life, Bill Borgos of Hyde Park; sister, Penny Oetjen - Simmons and husband, Phil Simmons, of Philmont, NY; brother, Duane Oetjen and wife, Becky, of Hyde Park; nieces and nephews, Andrew and Ria Simmons, and Karl and Emily Oetjen; uncle, Raymond Joyce Jr. and wife, Barbara, of Rhinebeck; cousins, Kevin Joyce and Sue Morgan, Debbie Mears and husband, Jamie, Lori Joyce, and Sharon Desso and husband, Rob, all of Vermont, Kathy Cote and husband, Jerry, of Florida; and many second and third cousins.
She is also survived by her extended family, Jodi and Alyssa Rymph of Hyde Park, and Cynthia Kent of Huntsville, AL; and former husband, Homer Markle Jr.
She was predeceased by her maternal grandfather, Raymond A. Joyce, Sr.; paternal grandfather, August A. Oetjen Sr., and wife, Beatrice; and paternal grandmother, Eleanor Decker and husband, Les.
Calling hours will be from 3 to 5 and 7 to 9 pm, Wednesday, March 25, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Funeral services will be at 10am, Thursday, March 26th at St. James' Episcopal Church, Rte. 9, Hyde Park. Rev. Chuck Kramer will be officiating.
In keeping with her wishes, cremation will follow and her ashes will be interred privately in the family plot in Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery.
