Hyde Park – Marie V. Dowd, a resident of Hyde Park for fifty-three years, died Friday, March 6, 2009 at Vassar Brothers Medical Center in Poughkeepsie.
Marie was educated in Poughkeepsie Schools and was the salutatorian of her high school class. She was graduated from the former New York State College for Teachers at Albany, and earned her Masters Degree from Teachers College, Columbia University. She did additional graduate work at SUNY, New Paltz.
Mrs. Dowd taught in the Hyde Park School System from 1947 to 1951. She returned to teaching in 1963, teaching English at the former Morse Junior High School and then the high school in the Poughkeepsie School System. She retired from teaching in 1982.
Born on December 30, 1919 in Nyack, New York, she was the daughter of the late Patrick and Margaret Malone Hart.
On June 30, 1951, at Holy Trinity Church, Poughkeepsie, she married Richard Dowd. He predeceased her on August 16, 1999.
She is survived by her son, Richard Dowd and his wife, Lori, of Hamilton, Ohio; son, William Dowd and his wife, Molly, of Parker, Colorado; and daughter, Anne Dowd Ignaffo and her husband, Thomas Ignaffo, of Hyde Park. Thomas Ignaffo and his wife, Meghan, of Newington, Connecticut, Katherine Ignaffo of Cambridge, Maryland, Hannah Dowd of Seattle, Washington, and Patrick Dowd of Parker, Colorado are the surviving grandchildren.
Calling hours will be from 4 to 8 pm, Wednesday, March 11, 2009 at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated by Rev. James A. Garisto at 10 am, Thursday, March 12th, at Our Lady of the Rosary Chapel of St. Peter’s Parish, Hudson View Dr., Poughkeepsie.
Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter’s Cemetery, Poughkeepsie.
