Hyde Park - Ronald Oakley Sr., 74, a long time Hyde Park resident, previously of Poughkeepsie, died Thursday, February 26, 2009 at home.
Mr. Oakley worked at the New York State Armory in Poughkeepsie for over 25 years until his retirement.
He loved animals especially his cat, Chico Jr., and was active with the South Shore Animal League.
Mr. Oakley loved being outdoors and spending time with his family. Family get togethers such as picnics and barbecues were his happiest times. He also enjoyed playing video games.
Ron served in the United States Air Force from 1952 - 1956. After regular duty and four years of service in the Air Force Reserves, he went on to serve with the Army National Guard for over twenty years. He retired as a Staff Sergeant in the early 1980's.
Born in Kingston on November 19, 1934, he was the son of the late Pearl Alice Oakley.
On September 17, 1961 in Poughkeepsie, he married Joyce Lorraine Taylor. She survives at home.
In addition to his wife, he is survived by his daughter, Sharon Secor and husband, Dennis, of Winter Springs, FL; son, Ronald J. Oakley Jr. of Hyde Park; daughter, Nancy L. Lane and husband, Donald G. Lane, of Poughkeepsie; daughter, Alice J. Van Tassell of Staatsburg; seven grandchildren, Kayla VanTassell, Denise Smith, Shelby and Krystal Secor, and David, Jessica, and Ashley Lane; two great grandchildren, Ryan and Tyler Smith; and two nephews.
In addition to his mother, he was predeceased by a brother, Robert Oakley; and a grandson, Anthony Michael Lane.
Calling hours will be from 2 to 4 pm, Sunday, March 1, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
Graveside services and burial with military honors will be at 11 am, Monday, March 2nd in the Veteran's Section of Union Cemetery, Hyde Park.
Memorial donations may be made to the Dutchess County SPCA, 636 Violet Ave., Hyde Park, NY 12538.
