| | | Poughkeepsie - Joan M. Burhans, 81, passed away, peacefully, at the Lutheran Care Center, Poughkeepsie on Friday, February 20, 2009.
Born on April 27, 1927, in Poughkeepsie, she was the daughter of William and Florence McGrath.
After graduating from Poughkeepsie High school, she went on to work as a secretary at IBM, Delaval, and the YMCA.
On May 14, 1950, she married William F. Moehrke, who predeceased her in July 1971. On June 19, 1976, she married John M. ‘Jack’ Burhans, who predeceased her on May 22, 1998.
She was also predeceased by her brother, William J. McGrath, of Albany, in 1985.
Joan was a member of the American Contract Bridge League since 1967 and reached the level of Silver Life Master in 1974. She was also a certified director since 1972, in which she operated her own duplicate bridge club held at various locations in Poughkeepsie until 1989. She also served on the Dutchess County Bridge Association, serving as President several times. To share her love of the game, she taught duplicate bridge through local adult education at Arlington High school and the YMCA and YWCA.
She enjoyed watching football and was an avid New York Jets fan.
Joan is survived by her three children, Jan C. and Lenny Hare of Salt Point, David W. Moehrke and Mary E. Totten of Poughkeepsie, and Carol Jean and John C. King of Cape Cod, Mass; six grandchildren, Jason W. Hare of New Jersey, Meghan C. Hare of Walden, Jacqueline C. Moehrke of Poughkeepsie, Trevor M. Moehrke of New York City, Sean W. King of Florida, and Sara C. King of Cape Cod; and several nieces and nephews.
Calling hours will be from 5 to 8 Pm, Monday, February 23, 2009 at Sweet’s Funeral Home, Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10 am, Tuesday February 24th at St. Mary’s Church, Church Street, Poughkeepsie. Monsignor John Brinn and Father Robert Panek will concelebrate.
Burial will be private and at the convenience of the family.
