| | | Hyde Park - Rita Biondini, 93, a Hyde Park resident for seven and a half years, died Wednesday, February 18, 2009 at home surrounded by her family.
A former Queens Village resident for over sixty years, Mrs. Biondini worked as a Supervisor at Sterns Dept. Store in Long Island for over thirty years until her retirement in March, 1984.
She was a member of the S.N.A.P. Senior Citizen Organization in Queens for sixteen years. In S.N.A.P., she acted as treasurer, ran trips, was active with the hospitality committee, their flea markets, and doing crafts.
Mrs. Biondini also volunteered as a Mentor at PS 33 elementary school in Queens Village for many years, and enjoyed sewing for herself.
Rita loved the opera and went regularly with her husband to the Met. She enjoyed going to the beach and walking the boardwalk with her husband and children.
Family was most important to Rita, and children always gravitated to her, whether at the mall or her own family members.
Most recently, she was a communicant of Regina Coeli Church, Hyde Park, and formerly of Our Lady of Lourdes, Queens Village.
Born in Lyons, NY on January 12, 1916, she was the daughter of the late John and Nicoletta DeAngelis. She was a graduate of John Adams High School in Brooklyn, and also attended St. John's University for two years.
On September 16, 1939 in St. Gabriel's Roman Catholic Church in Brooklyn, she married William A. Biondini Sr. Mr. Biondini predeceased her on November 4, 1984.
Survivors include her son, William A. Biondini Jr. and wife, Gerry, of Tucson, Arizona; daughter, Elaine Carreras Miressi and husband, Lou Miressi, of Hyde Park; five grandchildren, Eugene Carreras and wife, Anne, Edward Carreras and wife, Mindy, Eileen Arnold and husband, Chris, Evelyn Hess and husband, John, and Celeste Schulman and husband, William; nine great grandchildren, Rachel, Thomas, Gabriela, Joseph, and Steven Carreras, Darius, Audriana, and Domenica Hess, and Matthew Arnold; sister, Farra Lorenz of Long Island; and many nieces and nephews, great nieces and nephews, and great great nieces and nephews.
In addition to her husband, she was predeceased by five brothers, one sister, and numerous aunts and uncles.
Calling hours will be 2 to 4 and 7 to 9 pm, Sunday, February 22, 2009 at Sweet's Funeral Home Inc., Rte. 9, Hyde Park.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at 10am, Monday, February 23rd at Mariapolis Luminosa, 200 Cardinal Rd., Hyde Park. Rev. Michael Palazzo will officiate.
Burial will be in the family plot at St. Charles Catholic Cemetery, Farmingdale, NY.
