| | | Roland F. Myers, 87, of 614 West Mamie Eisenhower in Boone, went to the Lord on Sunday evening, January 15, 2012. He passed away at the Israel Family Hospice House in Ames at the end of a four-year battle with stomach cancer.
He was born July 15, 1924, in Boone, the son of Grover and Minnie (Baker) Myers.
A 1942 graduate of Boone High School, Roland was a World War II veteran serving with the U.S. Navy in the Pacific and the Philippines in 1945 and honorably discharged in 1946.
On September 3, 1950, he married Isobel F. Attey at the First Baptist Church in Boone.
Roland was a brakeman and conductor with Chicago & Northwestern railroad from 1947 to 1987. He also farmed for more than 60 years; first as a young man with his uncles on farms between Boone and Ames, and later with Jim Miller and his family on farms on the west edge of Boone.
He was a 50-year member with the Masons of Mount Olive Lodge No. 79 AF & AM in Boone. He also was a member of the American Legion and the Eastern Star.
Roland was an active member of the First Baptist Church of Boone. A beloved family man, he took great interest in his family's activities and pride in their accomplishments. He had many favorite sayings and "Dadisms" and shared them frequently with family members, particularly his children and grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents and siblings Loraine, Donald, Beverly (Modeland), and Helen (Wilson).
Survivors include his wife of 61 years, Isobel; children Thomas Myers and wife Denise of Rockford, Illinois, Mary Ann Anderson and husband Jim of Kansas City, Missouri, and Kathleen Houseman and husband Tony of Ames, Iowa; grandchildren LT CMDR Timothy Myers and wife Shannon of Virginia Beach, Virginia, Jeffrey Myers and wife Elise of Glenview, Illinois, and Allie Houseman and Eli Houseman both of Ames, Iowa; and great-grandchildren Brayden and Elizabeth Myers of Virginia Beach, Virginia, and Marie and Claire Myers of Glenview, Illinois.
Funeral services will be held Friday morning, January 20th, at 10:30 a.m. at First Baptist Church in Boone with Rev. Jerry Bertelson officiating.
Interment with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council will be in the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present during that time to greet friends. Visitations will continue at the Church on Friday morning from 8:30 a.m. until the time of service.
