| | | Clarence “Bud” Starks, 96, of 1103 13th Street in Boone, passed away at the Boone County Hospital on Saturday afternoon, August 20, 2011.
He was born on July 18, 1915 in Boone, Iowa the son of Clarence M. and Clara (Davis) Starks.
Bud, a life long Boone resident, graduated in 1934 from Boone High School. In 1934, Bud went to work in Des Moines delivering groceries with his motorcycle. He acquired a job with L.C. Smith typewriter branch in 1935.
Bud was a veteran of World War II serving with the US Army Air Force in the 7th Air Force for 5 years in the Pacific. After returning from the service, Bud acquired a typewriter dealership, Starks Typewriter and Supply Company in Fort Dodge and worked there 25 years.
On April 6, 1947, he married Helen Hultman with whom he enjoyed traveling and spending winters in Florida until her passing in May of 1994. Bud remarried on December 28, 2007 to Ann Jensen, a family friend.
He was a member of the Augustana Lutheran Church, a 60 years member of the American Legion Post #56, a former Elk’s Club member, and a member of the Boy Scouts as a youth.
He was known for riding his motorcycle, traveling in his motor home, and remembered by his friendly smile and quick wit. Bud filled his retirement years driving cars for S & H Motors.
His parents; first wife, Helen; and a sister, Frances Martin, preceded him in death.
Bud is survived by his wife Ann of Boone; a sister Berniece Schaeffer of Boone; 6 step-children and their families; nieces and nephews and their families; friends; and best companion George.
He will be missed greatly by all who knew him.
The family would like to thank the Eastern Star Masonic Home for the excellent care they provided to Bud over the last 3 years.
Bud’s wishes were to be cremated.
There will be no visitations.
Graveside services with Pastor Dick Dahle officiating and interment, with military honors conducted by the Boone Veterans Council, will be held on Tuesday afternoon, August 23rd at 1:30 p.m. at the Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone.
Those wishing to express their sympathies through a memorial may direct their gift to the family.
