| Bernice M. Cornelius, 94, formerly of Boone, Iowa passed away at her daughter’s home in Foristell, Missouri on Saturday morning, April 21, 2007.
She was born on November 20, 1912, in Guthrie County, Iowa the daughter of Henry and Jennie (Parker) Christensen. On August 14, 1937, she married Gerald Cornelius at Waukee, Iowa. Earlier in her life, Bernice graduated from Drake University in Des Moines after which she taught in a one-room country school for a few years. Following her marriage, she helped her husband on their farm. In 1950, Bernice and her family moved to Boone where she was employed as the bookkeeper at Hamilton Hardware for more than 35 years. For the past 18 years, Bernice has made her home with her daughter in Foristell, Missouri. Bernice was a member of the Marion Street United Methodist and First United Methodist Churches in Boone where she was a choir member and a member of ABWA. She especially enjoyed working in her flowers and manicuring her large lawn. Bernice was an avid reader until the loss of her vision. Her parents and husband Gerald in March of 1972 preceded her in death. Survivors include her daughter Joan (Edward) Powlishta of Foristell, Missouri; son Mickey (Kathi) Cornelius of Anada, Missouri; grandchildren Tony (Virginia) Cornelius of Boone, Iowa, Matthew (Lisa) Cornelius of Boone, Iowa, Mikki (Thad) Chase of Boone, Iowa, Kimberly Powlishta of St. Louis, Missouri, Kristin (David) Tanzyus of Collinsville, Illinois, Joshua Powlishta of St. Louis, Missouri; great-grandchildren Aimee and Jenna Cornelius both of Boone, Iowa, Robin and Will Cornelius both of Boone, Iowa, and Cameron and Caleb Tanzyus both of Collinsville, Illinois. Services will be held on Tuesday morning, April 24th at 11:00 a.m. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with Rev. Edward Powlishta officiating. Interment will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa. Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Tuesday morning from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. Memorials may be given to the Arthritis Foundation. | ||
