Weldon “Swede” Swedlund, 86, of 3648 Stagecoach Road of Stratford, Iowa passed away at the Van Diest Medical Center in Webster City, Iowa on Saturday afternoon, April 23, 2011.

He was born on March 29, 1925 in Stratford, Iowa the son of Earl and Myrtle (Erickson) Swedlund.

On April 12, 1945, he married Audrienne King at Mankato, Minnesota.

Weldon graduated from Stratford High School in 1943. On November 29, 1944, he enlisted in the US Army where he served with the 158TH RCT (Regimental Combat Team) in the Philippines and occupation of Japan. After his discharge on November 7, 1946, he returned to Stratford to farm where he continued to assist in the farming operation. In 1959, he began buying hogs and from 1973 to 1987, Weldon bought hogs at Central Iowa Stockyards. He also drove courier van for CDS until 2000.

He was a member of the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford for 65 years where he taught junior and senior high Sunday School and served on numerous boards and committees; was a charter member of the Stratford Lion’s Club; a 50-year member of the Masonic Acorn Lodge #601 A.F.& A.M. of Stratford; and a 66-year member of the American Legion, Fredrick W. Sonksen Post #576 of Stratford. Weldon and Dale Kane implemented the Avenue of Flags at the local cemeteries. Weldon also served on the Board of Directors for the Farmers Savings Bank, Stratford. Earlier this year, he and his wife, Audrienne, were presented the Leeds Award for lifetime community service.

For over 20 years, he wrote a column for the Stratford Courier and later compiled his favorites into a book titled “Stories from SwedeLand”. He often said "Everyone has a story" and in recent years, enjoyed visiting in elementary classrooms, sharing his ideas about writing stories and Americanism.

His parents and an infant sister preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife Audrienne; a daughter Alaire Willits of Sioux City, Iowa; 2 sons Neil Swedlund and wife Linda of Stratford, Iowa and Mark Swedlund and wife Janice of Ankeny, Iowa; grandchildren Kris and Stephen Bornholtz, both of Prague, Czech Republic, Tim Bornholtz of Fredericksburg, Virginia, Ali Riherd and husband John of Parkersburg, Iowa, Lindsay Wibholm and husband Erik of Stratford, Derek Swedlund of Denver, Colorado, and Haley Swedlund of New Haven, Connecticut; great-grandchildren Christopher, Nicholas, and Stephanie Bornholtz, Kobe, Kale and Kendall Riherd, and Kayley and Jayden Wibholm; a brother Dean Swedlund and wife Harriet of Brookings, South Dakota; and a brother-in-law Marshall King and wife Jean of Boone, Iowa.

Services will be held on Wednesday afternoon, April 27th at 1:30 p.m. at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford with Revs. Dot Hasler and Gina Spohnheimer officiating.

Private interment will be in the Oakwood Cemetery north of Stratford with military rites.

Friends may call at the Calvary United Methodist Church in Stratford on Tuesday from 3:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m. with the family present from 5:30 p.m. until 7:30 p.m.
