| Margaret Gordon Ashbaugh, 95, formerly of 1207 Union Street, Boone, Iowa and currently of the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, passed away at the Eastern Star Masonic Home on Friday morning, January 25, 2008. She had been a resident at the Eastern Star Masonic Home in Boone, Iowa since September of 2000.
She was born on September 10, 1912 on a farm west of Glidden, Iowa the daughter of John and Lena (Hebbel) Gordon. Margaret was a 1930 graduate of Glidden High School. She attended Buena Vista College in Storm Lake, Iowa and taught a one room rural school near Glidden for 2 years. She continued her studies at Buena Vista College for three summers and then taught 5th grade in Mechanicsville, Iowa for 3 years. She spent 4 years in Pomona, California, where her 2 children were born and returned to Iowa in 1944 and taught 6th grade in Onawa for 4 years. In 1948, she came to Boone and taught 5th grade at Lincoln Elementary School for 3 years, was a teaching principal there from 1951 until 1973 when she gave up her teaching duties and became principal at both Lincoln and Garfield Schools. She retired in 1977. She received her Bachelor’s Degree from Drake University in 1952, and her Master’s Degree from Drake University in 1957. She did additional graduate work at Iowa State University in Ames, Iowa. She was a member of the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, Iowa, where she served in many capacities including Church schoolteacher, youth club leader, president of the local United Presbyterian Women and had an intense interest in missions allowing her to visit missions in Guatemala, Yucatan and Alaska. She was an ordained deacon who served as moderator of deacons and as an ordained elder, served as Clerk of Session. Margaret served as a leader of 4-H, Girl Scouts, and Junior Garden Club. She was a member of the Boone Garden Club, American Horticultural Society, and Delta Kappa Gamma Society International. Margaret was an avid gardener, talented cook and seamstress. She loved to travel, especially to Alaska. To help other needy young people receive an education, Margaret established the Margaret Gordon Ashbaugh Scholarship fund at Buena Vista College, which has awarded thus far, scholarships to 44 students and will continue throughout the years. Her parents, 1 son Robert Ashbaugh in January of 1963, 1 brother, Wilbur Gordon, 2 sisters, Ellen Huendling and Alice Gillett, a sister-in-law Irma Hardesty, and 1 niece Louise Smith preceded her in death. Survivors include 1 daughter, Charlotte Battey and her husband John of Grand Rapids, Michigan, 3 grandsons and their family, Robert Battey and his wife Joy and their two children Emily Battey and Joshua Robert Battey all of Grand Rapids, Michigan, David Battey and his wife Rachel and their three children Devon Battey, Daniel Battey and Landon Battey all of Grand Rapids, Michigan, Peter Battey and his fiancée Ellen Zwarensteyn of Grand Rapids, Michigan, 3 nieces, Alice Zimmerman of Sac City, Iowa, Janna Clark of Grinnell, Iowa and Julia Gillett of Duluth, Minnesota, and 1 nephew Alex Gillett of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. Services will be held on Tuesday afternoon, January 29th at 1:00 p.m. at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone, Iowa with Dr. Richard Harken officiating. Interment will be in the Merle Hay Memorial Cemetery in Glidden, Iowa. Friends may call at the First Presbyterian Church in Boone on Tuesday from 9:00 a.m. until the time of service. | ||
