William Roy Buck, 83, formerly of Boone, Iowa, and currently of San Diego, California, passed away at Sharp Grossmont Hospital in La Mesa, California on Tuesday afternoon, August 7, 2007.

He was born on January 31, 1924, in Boone, Iowa the son of Wallie and Bessie (Nystrom) Buck.

On March 22, 1946, he married Janet Veale at the Central Christian Church in Boone.

Roy was a veteran of World War II stationed in Italy near Foggia, with the Army Air Force, in a P38 Squadron from 1944 to 1945. Roy later joined the Air Force Reserve, attained the rank of Master Tech Sergeant, and retired from the Reserve after 30 years of service.

Roy was a member of the original Iowa Air Guard stationed at the Boone airport. He was one of the personnel who built the first National Guard hanger at the Boone airport. In 1959, the family moved to San Diego where Roy was a postal employee for 25 years.

He was a member of the VFW, American Legion, and the National Association of Letter Carriers. Roy enjoyed singing in Barber Shop Quartets.

His parents, and 1 daughter, Susan Karnowski of Evans, Georgia, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his wife, Janet of San Diego, California, 3 grandchildren, Marron (Don) Harper and John (Peggy) Karnowski all of Georgia, Steve Karnowski of Oklahoma, 8 great-grandchildren, 1 son-in-law, Lawrence Karnowski of Georgia, and 2 brothers-in-law, Joe (Marge) Veale of San Diego, California, John (Barbara) Veale of Boone, Iowa

Services will be Friday morning, August 17th at 10:00 A.M. at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone with Col. Tom Lundberg officiating.

Interment with full military honors conducted by the Veterans Council of Boone will be in Linwood Park Cemetery in Boone, Iowa.

Friends may call at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 8:00 P.M. and Friday morning from 8:00 A.M. until time of service.

The family will be present at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Thursday evening from 6:00 P.M. to 7:30 P.M. to greet friends.

Memorials may be given to the family for a memorial to be determined at a later date.
