| | | Sarah Evanelle (Van Pelt) Erickson, age 94, went home to be with our Lord on Monday, July 9, 2007. She had been a resident at the Eastern Star Home since July of 1993.
Evanelle was born February 21, 1913, to Burton and Sally (Rinker) Van Pelt on a farm north of Beaver. While attending high school in Beaver, she enjoyed acting in many plays and operettas. She graduated as valedictorian of her class in 1930. In the following two years, she worked in several households taking care of mothers and their newborn babies.
On August 9, 1932, at the Marion Street Methodist Church Parsonage, she was united in marriage to Donald C. Erickson. The couple farmed for a time near Beaver and Boxholm, and then moved to Ogden. In 1945, they moved with their five children to a farm southeast of Luther.
Throughout those years, Evanelle was an active member of the Luther Methodist Church where she served in various capacities in the Women’s Society, taught Sunday School and was Sunday School Superintendent. She was active in her community’s Parent-Teacher Association where she served a term as president. She sold Avon for a number of years and was active in Farm Bureau and a local Los Amigos club. She and Don also enjoyed playing pinochle with their many friends. Evanelle’s hobbies included candle making and ceramics, and they both enjoyed the music that she played at her leisure on the organ that Don bought her.
In 1980, following the closing of the Luther Methodist Church, the couple joined the First United Methodist Church in Boone. Following their retirement in 1984, they moved to 948 Park Circle in Boone. At that time, Evanelle joined the Boone Women’s Club where she sang in the chorus and served as president for two years. She also enjoyed her volunteer work with the Boone County Hospital Auxiliary where she served for several years.
Evanelle took great pleasure in her children and grandchildren. She treated her sons-in-law and daughters-in-law as her own. She was a wonderful mother and homemaker and always prepared delicious meals for family and friends. She found great joy in entertaining family and friends in her home throughout the years.
She was the last of 13 siblings and was preceded in death by her husband, Don; five brothers Harold, Paul, David, Glen, and Arthur; and seven sisters Edna, Ruth, Iris, Emmogene, Thelma, Aletha, and Elno. Three grandchildren, Dale Erickson, Sally Ann Pohl and Eric Pohl, also preceded her in death.
Survivors include three sons and daughters-in-law, Darrell and Marilyn Erickson of Madrid, Darwin and Norma Erickson of Ames, Chuck and Caryl Erickson of Madrid; two daughters and sons-in-law, Marjorie and Bill Shreve of Luther and Sharon and John Pohl of Boone; 12 grandchildren; 26 great-grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.
At 9:30 a.m. Thursday, July 12th, the family will have an Interment service at Rose Hill Cemetery east of Luther with a Memorial service following at 11:00 a.m. at the First United Methodist Church in Boone with Rev. Philip Webb officiating.
Visitations will be at the Stark-Welin Chapel in Boone on Wednesday evening from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. with the family present from 6:00 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. to greet friends.
Memorials may be given to the First United Methodist Church in Boone or Luther Rose Hill Cemetery Association.
