Ersil Eugene "Gene" Norris, 88, of Columbia City, died at 12:05 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012 at Parkview Whitley Hospital.

He was born February 4, 1924 in Pierceton, Indiana a son of Ersil James and Edna Bernice (Leedy) Norris. His formative years were spent in Pierceton and Larwill. He graduated from Larwill High School.

On September 29, 1942 he enlisted in the United States Army Air Corps, serving in Hawaii during World War II. He was honorably discharged December 17, 1945.

On August 10, 1946 he was united in marriage to Mildred E. Ferrell. They made their home in Columbia City and Peoria, Illinois for a short time before moving to their home in Washington Township, Whitley County where they resided for 36 years. Mrs. Norris died May 29, 1989. In 1990 Gene moved to his home in Columbia City.

He retired from Magnavox in the mid 1980s with many years of service and retired from the United States Government Civil Service in 1989.

His church membership was with Columbia City United Methodist Church.

Surviving relatives include a son and a daughter, Steven (Sandy) Norris of Painesville OH and Susan Norris of Columbia City; a grandson, Kraig Norris of Columbia City; former granddaughter-in-law, Michelle Norris of Columbia City; three great grandchildren, Natasha Norris-Krider, Katlyn Norris and Kane Norris; three great great grandsons, Eathan & Ayden Krider and Brycen Lesley; three sisters, Willodean White, Nancy Walker and Lana (Wayne) Terman, all of Columbia City; brother-in-law and three sisters-in-law, Donald & Madeline Ferrell, Margaret Dafforn and Jean Ferrell, all of Columbia City.

The funeral service will be held at 10 a.m. Monday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City. The burial will be in South Park Annex Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 6 p.m. Sunday at the funeral home.

Preferred memorials are to Columbia City United Methodist Church.
