Marian Emelyn Bollinger, 99, retired South Whitley Librarian, died at 6:25 p.m. Tuesday, July 3, 2012 at Timbercrest Healthcare, North Manchester where she had been a resident since 2007.

She was born January 1, 1913 in South Whitley a daughter of Clarence O. and Leola B. (Faudree) Enos. Her formative years were spent in South Whitley. She graduated from South Whitley High School in 1930.

On June 23, 1934, she was united in marriage to William B. Bollinger. They made their home in South Whitley. Mr. Bollinger died February 4, 1961.

In 1931, she began her work career with Grip Nut and began as a part-time assistant Librarian. In 1935, she went to work with her husband at Bollinger Neon Sign Company. In the late fifties, her husband and his partners started Mill Supplies, Fort Wayne. In 1957, she became the Director of the South Whitley Public Library. During her tenure she oversaw the construction of the present library and an addition making it a community treasure and an exceptional small town library. Her weekly column in the South Whitley Tribune promoted new books that arrived at the library. She retired from the library in September 2003.

Her memberships included, the United Methodist Church of South Whitley where she was the church organist for 78 years. She was formally recognized for her accomplishment in 2002. She was a member of the Indiana Business Women's Association. In 2003, she was presented by Governor O´┐ŻBannon the Sagamore of the Wabash.

Surviving relatives include two daughters, Sue Rose Grossman Marker, Huntington and Julia Ann Glass, Greenfield; seven grandchildren, Scott Grossman, South Whitley, Mala Grossman Day, Claypool, Rick Bollinger, South Whitley, Mark Bollinger, Fort Wayne, Brooke Bollinger Lincoln, South Whitley, Heather Glass Pehler, Gurnee, IL and Jordan Glass, Indianapolis; 14 great grandchildren.

In addition to her husband, she was preceded in death by a son, John David Bollinger, grandson, Steven Grossman and a brother, Richard Enos.


The funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Wednesday at the United Methodist Church of South Whitley. Burial will be in the South Whitley Cemetery. Visitation will be 4 to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Smith & Sons Miller Chapel, South Whitley.

Preferred memorials are to South Whitley/Cleveland Twp Public Library or United Methodist Church of South Whitley.
