| | | Lauretta I. Mowan, 75, formerly of Smith Township, Whitley County, died at 3:35 p.m. Wednesday, June 24, 2009 at Renaissance Village where she had been a resident since March 2007.
She was born December 7, 1933 in Whitley County, Indiana a daughter of Jesse and Rose (Witte) Simon. A lifelong Whitley County resident, she graduated from Columbia City High School in 1951.
On May 24, 1959 she married Billy J. Pence. Mr. Pence died May 27, 1977.
She was a Churubusco rural route mail carrier for 20 years, owned & operated the 33 Club in Churubusco for 13 years along with her husband Billy, worked at Farm Bureau Insurance for five years and Citizens National Bank for four years.
On January 11, 1986 she married Robert W. Mowan. Mr. Mowan died April 22, 1998.
Her memberships included Faith Lutheran Church in Churubusco, V.F.W. Post #3846 Auxiliary where she was a past president, Eagles #2455 Auxiliary in Albion, American Legion Post #98 Auxiliary where she was a 50+ year member and National Rural Letter Carriers Association.
Surviving relatives include two sons, Timmy J. (Ruthanna) Pence and Mark A. (Donna) Pence, both of Churubusco; two step sons and a step daughter, Lewis A. (Deb) Mowan of Boise, ID, Robert L. (Susan) Mowan of Knoxville, TN and Judy (Sam) Sicola of Houston, TX; a granddaughter; several step grandchildren; several step great grandchildren; a sister, Mary Alice Simon Lincoln of Columbia City; and a brother, Jene Simon of Columbia City.
In addition to her husbands, she was preceded in death by a son, Gregory Davis; a step daughter, Sandra Davis; a brother, Leroy Simon; and two sisters, Doris Simon and Rea Lambert.
The funeral service will be held at 2 p.m. Sunday at Smith & Sons Funeral Home, Columbia City with Rev. Lane Burgland, pastor of Faith Lutheran Church, officiating. The burial will be in Blue River Cemetery. The visitation will be from 2 to 4 and 6 to 8 p.m. Saturday at the funeral home.
