Mabel Awsumb, age 97, of Glendive, Montana and formerly of Velva, North Dakota, passed away on Thursday, May 8, 2003 at the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care Facility in Glendive.
Funeral services will be held at 2:30 P.M. (CST), Monday, May 12, 2003 at the Oak Valley Lutheran Church in Velva, North Dakota with Pastor Mary A. Schave officiating. Interment will be in the Velva Cemetery in Velva. Silvernale-Silha Funeral Home of Glendive is entrusted with arrangements.
Mabel was born on April 8, 1906 in McHenry County, Bergen, North Dakota, the daughter of Kristoffer and Kima (Andersen) Christofferson. She received her early education in rural McHenry County Schools. Mabel graduated from high school in Bergen, North Dakota and attended Minot Normal School where she attained her two year standard degree. She later received further education by attending summer school. She taught in the North Dakota area schools for nine years. Mabel was united in marriage to Chris Awsumb on June 25, 1930 in Minot, North Dakota. She and her husband lived in Minnesota and then moved to Bergen, North Dakota where they farmed until moving to Velva, North Dakota in 1945. After Chris' death in 1973, Mabel continued living in Velva until 1995 when she moved to Glendive, Montana to reside with her daughter and son-in-law. Mabel had been a resident of the Glendive Medical Center Extended Care since October of 2002.
Mabel was a member of the Oak Valley Lutheran Church, a past member of the Velva Senior Citizens Center, the American Legion Auxiliary and the Lake Hester Club. She also belonged to various church circles. Mabel had served as the bookkeeper during the building project of the Oak Valley Lutheran Church. She was an avid reader and genealogy was of a special interest to her tracing her family lineage back through many generations and she has left this information for the enjoyment of her family.
Mabel was preceded in death by her parents; her husband; and four brothers.
Survivors include her daughter, Carol Friederichs and her husband Joseph of Glendive; her granddaughters, Ann Friederichs of Dillon, Montana and Marie Logan and her husband Kelly of Sidney, Montana; her sister-in-law, Lillian Christopherson of Elbow Lake, Minnesota; numerous nieces and nephews.
