| | | Crawford Thornsberry, age 86, resident of rural Shelby, Ohio passed away on Monday, October 26, 2009 in Willard Mercy Hospital. He was born on September 19, 1923 in Knott County, Kentucky to the late Lewis and Mattie (Hall) Thornsberry and had been a Shelby resident for over 50 years. He retired from the former Copperweld in Shelby after 30 years of service. He was a member of the Little Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church and enjoyed gardening, farming and making people laugh.
He was a member of the 281st Field Artillery Battalion of the US Army. As a member of a 105mm howitzer gun crew, his unit fought through France, the Low Countries and into Germany. Crossing the Rhine River on a pontoon bridge, they subsequently defeated the German Siegfried Line. His unit was then charged with guarding former SS troops in a prison camp before returning home.
He is survived by his wife of 60 years, Thelma Thornsberry, whom he married on August 13, 1949; two daughters, Charlene (Dr. Vince) Trago of Lexington, OH; and Anna Lou Thornsberry of Shelby; four grandchildren, Brendan Crawford, Patrick, Killian and Bridget Trago; six sisters, Anna King; Bethel (Raymond) Anderson; Roxie Hall; Eddie (Pete) Butler; Marcella (Marvin) Rice all of Kentucky; and Lora (Vester) Webb of Virginia; numerous nieces and nephews.
In addition to his parents he was preceded in death by a brother, Arthur Thornsberry; two infant brothers, Luther and Crockett; and two infant sisters, Dixie and Clerinda.
Visitation will be held at the the Little Rebecca Old Regular Baptist Church on Henry Road in Plymouth, Ohio beginning Wednesday, October 28, 2009 from 4-7 PM with church services to follow, continuing all day Thursday with visitation hours from 5-7 PM with church services following, and concluding with the funeral service on Friday at 11:00 AM with Elder Buddy Carty officiating.
