John M. “ Jack” O’Rourke, 83 of Burt St. formerly of Finger Street died Saturday Oct. 18, 2008 at his residence after a lengthy illness. He had been a senior acquisitions executive with I.B.M. in Kingston having been employed from 1955 to 1987. He was a member of the IBM Quarter Century Club. He was a graduate of Kingston High School Class of 1942. In 1943, he entered the United States Army Airforce as an aerial engineer, and earned the American Service Medal, and the World War II Victory Medal. He fondly recalled his employment as a tug boat crew member on the Hudson River. He was an alumni of Manhattan College Class of 1949 with his Bachelor’s Degree in History. He continued his post graduate work at Niagara University, and in 1951 earned his Master’s Degree in Education at Albany State University. For twenty-one years, from 1970 to 1991 he served on the Saugerties Board of Education. He was a member of the Knight’s of Columbus Council in Saugerties, and the American Legion Post #72. He was a past president of the St. Mary’s of the Snow PTA, and facilitated the CYO Friday night roller skating at the Parish Hall for many years. He was a gifted artist who work primarily with charcoal, and oil media. He was known for his decorative artistic talents , that he donated to the St. Patrick’s Day church functions. He was an illustrator for the Saugerties Post Star in the 1970's. He was an avid high average league bowler, both in Saugerties and Kingston, for over 60 years, always pursuing that elusive 300 game. He enjoyed horseshoes, and taking flight lessons locally in Columbia County..
He was born in Kingston December 27, 1924 son of the late John F. and Anna Lane O’Rourke..
Surviving are his wife of 52 years Dona Marie Hull O’Rourke. Two daughters: Mary Wilsey of Phoenicia, and Kate Lombard of Dover NH. Two sons: John M. O’Rourke Jr. of Quarryville, and Kevin of Titusville, FL. Several grandchildren, nieces and nephews also survive. He was predeceased by an infant son Michael, and his brother Joseph O’Rourke.
His funeral procession will form on Wednesday at 9:15am at the Seamon-Wilsey Funeral Home 45 John St. Saugerties. At 10am a Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated at the St. John the Evangelist Church Rt. 212 Centerville. Burial with military honors will be in St. Mary’s Cemetery Barclay Hgts. Saugerties.
