Helen Caroline Vyse Gerbasi

Helen Caroline Vyse Gerbasi of New Waverly, Texas passed away at the home of her daughter in Coldspring, Texas on Sunday, December 15, 2013. She was 92 years old. She was born September 8, 1921 in Cleveland, Ohio to William and Helen Vyse.

Helen grew up in Cleveland, Ohio. She moved to New Waverly, Texas in August 1974. Shortly after moving to New Waverly, Helen took a job at Rice Foods in Spring, Texas as a receiving clerk. At the young age of 68 she took a job with the U.S. Forest Service through the SCSEP program. A job that was supposed to be short lived turned into 17 years of joy for Helen. Helen loved the Forest Service. She retired from her front desk duties at the Forest Service at 85 years of age but still volunteered at the “Trash Bash” every year after that.

Helen’s family and pets were the loves of her life. No matter the occasion “Grandma” brought the family together. She enjoyed rounding everyone up and planning their part. “Grandma” loved to see her grandchildren and great- grandchildren. “Grandma” loved her birds, her cats, and especially her Pomeranian dogs “Poppy”, “Rascal”, “Sandyman” and “Misty”. She loved her “granddog” Pooh Bear. The raccoons, opossums, squirrels, deer, and wild birds will miss her feeding them.

Helen was preceded in death by her parents, William and Helen Vyse, her brothers, William and Henry Vyse, her husband, Anthony Gerbasi, her sons, Randolph Garling and Robert Garling and great-granddaughter Bri’ Garling.

Helen is survived by her children: son William Garling of Conroe, Texas, daughter Loraine Stiner and husband Thomas of Montgomery, Texas, son Russell Gerbasi of New Waverly, Texas, daughter Rochelle Allen and husband James of Coldspring; daughter-in-law Debbie Garling of Willis, Texas; her grandsons, Randall Stiner and wife Amy of Navasota, Texas, Rob Garling of Splendora, Texas, and William Garling and wife Marlene of Willis, Texas; granddaughters, Veronica Shortt and husband Chris of Pipe Creek, Texas, Aurora Garling of Houston, Texas, Kristen Blanks and husband Tommy of trinity, Texas, Brooke Stiner of Pipe Creek, Texas, Ashlee Garling, of Willis, Texas and Chance Garling of Willis, Texas ; great-grandson, Gabriel Stiner Acklin, Gauge Stiner, Thomas Stiner, Isaiah Shortt, and Alan Blanks; great-granddaughters, Paige Stiner, Victoria Stiner Acklin, Brenae Swafford, Alyssa Smith, Shannon Blanks, Lexia Blanks, Aaliyah Reece, Dilana Garling, Willow Garling and Ariel Reece; and special second family members Opal and James Bloodworth.

“Grandma” did it her way. She said “Let somebody know that they matter.”

Family will receive friends Wednesday, December 18, 2013 from 1:00-2:00 p.m., with the funeral service to follow at 2:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, 1700 Normal Park Drive, Huntsville, Texas 77340. Interment will follow in Adickes Addition of Oakwood Cemetery, Huntsville.
