Librada Juarez Hernandez passed away at the age of 99 years on September 28, 2009 in Huntsville, Texas. Funeral services will be held Wednesday, September 30, 2009, at 2:00 p.m. at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Huntsville, Texas.
Mrs. Hernandez was born in Monterrey, Mexico on July 20, 1910 to Enrique and Maria Guzman Juarez. She was preceded in death by her parents, her husband, Juan Hernandez, and a son, Francisco Hernandez. She is survived by daughters Elizabeth Garcia, Lidia Shadle, and Consuelo Roussett; sons Ruben, Benjamin and Roberto Hernandez; and numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren.
She moved to Texas in the aftermath of the Mexican Revolution with other members of the Martinez extended family. By the mid-1920s, most of that family was working at a sawmill owned by Edward Boettcher, Sr. in Westfield, Texas. When Mr. Boettcher moved his mill to the Huntsville area in the late 1920s, many of his workers moved with him, thus establishing the first sizable Mexican-American community in Walker County.
Mrs. Hernandez lived in Boettcher’s Mill, where her husband was employed, for over three decades, and her children were born and raised there. She was a member of Faith Memorial Baptist Church for many years and was one of the last survivors of that original group of Mexican families who moved to this area to help open Boettcher’s Mill.
The family wishes to thank all of the caregivers that have cared for our mother over the last several years of her life, especially Mae Bookman.
All who knew her will miss her and will cherish their memories of her.
