Colonel (ret) Gary Warren Hipps Sr. passed away peacefully in his home on Saturday, June 7th. He is survived by his wife Patricia and brother, Dr. Phil Hipps and his wife Peggy who reside in Phoenix, AZ. He is also survived by his three children: Gary Jr. and his wife Colleen, Gaylynn Muyshondt and her husband Mauricio, Trecie Pacione and her husband Adam, his stepdaughter Evelyn Graham and her husband Paul. Gary has 11 grandchildren who affectionately called him, "Bid Daddy". They are: Jonathan and Michael Biehl, Rebecca, Alex, and Cristina Muyshondt, Drew, Anne Cadmen, Thomas and Sam Graham, and Ava and Veronica Pacione.

Born in 1937 to loving parents Roy and Alma Hipps in Dallas, he spent his childhood hunting and fishing with his younger brother Phil. He graduated from Sunset High School in Dallas in 1955. Gary continued on to Texas A&M where he was a member of the Corps of Cadets graduating with his BBA in Business Administration as well as receiving his commission in the United States Army in 1958.

He led a distinguished 26 year career as an Air Defense Artillery officer serving in Vietnam in 1969 and as a staff member to the Joint Chiefs in Washington, DC.

Advancing to the rank of Colonel before retiring in 1986, he went on to work as the Facility Maintenance Director for the Texas Department of Corrections for the next 15 years where he retired in 2001.

Always fair-minded, with an unassuming nature and a big sense of humor, Gary was respected and admired by friends and family to whom he gave wise counsel. He will be greatly missed and well remembered.

A memorial service will be held at 6p.m. on Wednesday, June 11, 2008 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home located at 1700 Normal Park Drive, Huntsville, TX.
