|Jerome B. “Jerry” Packman originally from Sioux Falls, SD. died April 10, 2012 quietly in his Willis, TX home. He was 80 years old.
A visitation will be held Saturday, April 14 from 2:00-4:00 at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis.
A graveside service will be held Tuesday, April 17 at 10:00 a.m. at Houston National Cemetery in Houston.
A native of Sioux Falls, SD, he was the son of Lysle and Viola Packman and brother to Darlene. Jerry attended Southern State Teacher’s College, where he played football, before joining the Army, where he worked as a helicopter mechanic during the Korean War.
Jerry married the love of his life, Therese “Colleen” Rooney on April 11, 1953. He and Colleen raised eight children together in Sioux Falls, SD before moving most of the clan to Texas in 1974. Jerry worked as a body shop manager at a few dealerships before settling in at Sam Montgomery Oldsmobile where he remained until his retirement in 1991.
Colleen passed away June of 1987 and Jerry lived the rest of his life with a broken heart. In his later years he enjoyed his numerous grandchildren and more recently his great grandchildren. He loved to attend local high school sporting events and spend the day with his son-in-law, and good friend, Jimmy, and to visit with his friends Granny, Dave, Dan, and Marsha and dog Bentley. He especially loved the holidays where his kids from around the country could all join together and celebrate.
Jerry is survived by seven of his eight children, Joanne Packman and Darold Kolbrek of Sioux Falls, Karen Packman-O’Dea of Sioux Falls, Mike Packman and his wife Lena of Corpus Christi , Mary VanWinkle and Jose Garcia of Willis, Barbara Nichols and her husband Jimmy of Panorama Village, Jerry “Bud” Packman and his wife Frances of Spring, and Tom Packman and his wife Trish Of Cypress. As Well as his son-in-law Mark Rentfro of Middletown CA. He is also survived by his grandchildren and their spouses, Jarod O’Dea and Ashley, Danny VanWinkle and Sally, Justin Nichols and Laura, Jeff Nichols, Nicole Carrillo and Joe, Colleen and Kyle Packman, Kevin, Matthew and Jacob Packman, Stephanie Rentfro, Janae Packman-Vandershans, John Nettles and Jenifer Godfroy and his two great-grandchildren, Charlie VanWinkle and Easton Nichols and was anxiously awaiting the birth of his 3rd great grandchild. He was preceded in death by his parents, wife Colleen, sister Darlene, and daughter Jeanne.
