|Robert Lee Bob Gunderson, 62 of Willis, Texas, son of Russell G. and Mary Ellen Gunderson was born on August 14,1949 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. He died Thursday, October 6, 2011 after a lengthy battle with leukemia.
He grew up on the family farm North of Parker, South Dakota. He was a member of the Grace Lutheran Church in Parker, South Dakota. He graduated high school from Parker High and then enlisted in the U. S. Army. He served in the U. S. Army from 1969 to 1975. He was awarded the National Defense Service Medal and was an expert rifleman. After the Army, he enrolled in Lake Area Vocational Technical College in Watertown, South Dakota, where he studied carpentry for one year. After completing his college, he moved to Britton, South Dakota where he managed a VFW bar and he worked for KORES Construction. He returned to Parker, South Dakota and worked for Mid Western Homes out of Rapid City, South Dakota. He then moved to Texas. He owned Bob Gunderson Construction.
Mr. Gunderson was preceded in death by his parents, a niece, Jamie Johnston Marsh, also from leukemia; one step son, Robert Eugene Klement and one step granddaughter, Peggy Eileen Gruber. He is survived by his wife of 23 years, Peggy Gunderson of Willis, one son Chip Gunderson and wife Chelsea of Onalaska; daughter, Kelsi Groth and husband Jeff of Parker, South Dakota; three sisters, Jean Johnson and husband Mike of Vancouver, Washington, Joanne Holmberg of Federal Way, Washington, and Jan Gunderson-Jaques of Parker South Dakota; one brother, Doug Gunderson of Parker, South Dakota; two step daughters, Mary Cox and Melody Hector, both of Conroe; 11 grandchildren and one great grandson.
Funeral services will be held on Tuesday, October 11th at 10 AM in the Chapel of Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home, Willis, Texas. Interment is scheduled for 3:30 PM at Salem Cemetery, Rusk, Texas. Family will receive friends at Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home in Willis on Monday, October 10th from 6-8 PM.
