Alfred Hobe Melbourne, age 91, passed away on March 16, 2011. He is survived by his wife, Delores Melbourne; son David Melbourne and wife, Elizabeth; daughter Susan Hake and husband Steve; and grandchildren William Melbourne, Katelyn and Jennifer Hake. Hobe is preceded in death by his parents Alfred and Mildred Melbourne; and grandson Ryan Taylor Hake.

Hobe was born in St. Paul in 1919 and was raised in Minneapolis, Minnesota. After serving in the Navy during WWII, he returned back home to Minneapolis, where he graduated from the University of Minnesota with a degree in History. His passion for history led to his interest in traveling all across the East Coast and into the South where he visited all the major Civil War battlefields. His love of world history also took him back through Europe, South America, and one memorable trip to Japan. He traveled extensively through the United States as well, and never missed an opportunity to learn something new about how America was built. He also loved to read and his library was filled with historical biographies of great world leaders throughout time.

Hobe retired from a successful sales career selling new homes in the greater Houston area, but never stayed idle for long. He volunteered his time working with the Houston Grand Opera as well as helping feed Houston's homeless population. Hobe was very proud of the time he spent volunteering and helping building awareness for the SEARCH Homeless Project in Houston as well as the giving of his time working with the Salvation Army in Conroe.

Visitation with the family is scheduled for Sunday, March 20 from 3-5 PM at the Sam Houston Memorial Funeral Home located at 10129 FM 1097 West in Willis. Services officiated by Rev. Hiram (Doc) Jones will also be held Monday, March 21 at 10:30AM at Smith Memorial Park Cemetery adjacent to the funeral home in Willis. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Montgomery United Methodist Church Building Fund. You are invited to leave a written condolence to the family on our website at www.shmfh.com.
