Fitzhugh Lee Kennedy of New Windsor, New York went home to be with the Lord on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 at Wingate at Beacon in Beacon, New York. He was 80 years old.

Fitzhugh also known as “Lee Vann” or “Fitz” was born to Violet Vann in Newburgh, NY. He attended the Newburgh Free Academy, where he was a member of the cross country track team.

At 17, he entered the United States Armed Forces where he served in both the US Navy and the US Air Force. He achieved several military honors and retired after 20 years of service with an honorable discharge as a Staff Sergeant.

In the early sixties, Lee began a second career at IBM as an Inventory Management Specialist. Subsequent to his second retirement, Lee, who was never one to remain idle, continued as an active participant in his church and community. He pursued his love of driving and of helping others through part time employment as a driver for various entities including the Town of Newburgh and City of Newburgh as well as the Club 60 Program.

An avid fisherman, gardener and bicyclist, he loved the outdoors. He enjoyed listening to all music, especially jazz, and sang in both the Men’ Chorus and Voices of Zion choir at his lifelong church AME Zion of Newburgh. He was also a coach of several youth basketball and soccer teams. Lee always led by example and was a mentor to many young men and women.

He is survived by his loving and devoted wife, Delores of New Windsor, NY; his son Harold of Richmond, TX; his daughter and son-in-law Paula and Dr. Scott Burr of Bowie, MD; his granddaughter Jamie of Atlanta, GA, and a host of relatives, including the William and Marion Smith family, the Charles and Phyllis Woodard family and Allen Judd. Special friends include James and Sonia Johnson, the Edith Henderson family, Daryl Cartwright, Brenda Hicks-Hush, Robert Moody, Gary McEntee, Karen Mondeck, Timothy and Marta Newkirk and the Rosemary Moffa family. He is preceded in death by his mother and stepfather Paul McPherson.

Reverend Twila Rucker Caines, Officiating.

Interment will be held at Orange County Veterans Memorial Cemetery Goshen. New York.
