Stanley Vincent Mickens was born in Columbia, South Carolina on March 22, 1962. He was the eldest of four children of Israel and Ernestine Mickens of Columbia, S.C. Stan, as friends and family called him, attended Brooklyn Technical High School, in Brooklyn, New York where he excelled in mathematics and chemistry. In 1980, he graduated and in that same year, he was nominated and accepted as a cadet at the United States Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. While at West Point, Stan continued to excel in the sciences and participated in intramural sports, the chess club and the Academy newspaper. In June 1984, he graduated from the Academy and was commissioned a Second Lieutenant in the Chemical Corps and assigned to the JFK Center for Special Warfare School. After graduating from Special Forces school, Stan remained on active duty as a member of a Special Forces “A” team for the next five and one-half years before transferring into the active army reserve as a Special Forces Captain. Among his many awards and decorations were the Special Forces Qualification Tab, Airborne Parachutist Badge, Malayan Jungle Warfare Badge, Air Assault Qualification Badge and National Defense Medal.

After receiving an honorable discharge from the U.S. Army, Stan attended Columbia University in New York City, graduating in 1991 with a Masters in Business Administration. He then embarked on a career in the corporate world of business, first acquiring a job with United Technologies in Middletown, Connecticut, then GE Capital as a Purchasing VP in Stamford, Connecticut. With the global business experience he gained at GE, he launched a career with Eaton Corporation of Cleveland, Ohio as a Vice President of Supplier Resource Management (SRM). His next role was Vice President and General Manager, General Products Division. In 2006, Stan assumed the position of Vice President, General Manager of the Eaton Electrical Components Division based in Moon Township, PA.
Stan was a very intelligent and creative thinker, who was full of ideas, plans and a clear vision of what he wanted to accomplish. His vision was to retire at the age of 50, so that he could spend more time with his wife and two children. He loved his family very much, and providing for their well-being was the foremost thought throughout his career.
Whenever conversing with Stanley, you would know immediately that he was well read on a myriad of topics, issues and events. No subject was too obscure or off the beaten path for Stan to delve into and take something away from. He especially enjoyed philosophical discussions because he enjoyed exchanging points of view with people. In fact, Stan never met a stranger, and he took great pleasure in talking to anybody about anything. Those of us, who knew and loved Stan, might label him as “frugal” in some aspects of his life, but he never skimped on good food, great French fries, even better wine, electronic gadgets and his family (and not necessarily in that order). Stanley also loved sports and especially those in which his wife and children could participate. They fished together, golfed together, played tennis together and enjoyed the outdoors together wherever they lived. Additionally, he and his family were very actively engaged in Jack and Jill of America, Girl Scouts, lacrosse, basketball, chess and science camps.
During Spring Break of 2008, the family spent what would be their last family gathering at their vacation home on Amelia Island, Florida. They played plenty of tennis, ate lots of seafood, and celebrated Stan’s 46th birthday with much fanfare. They even took their last family portrait on Easter Sunday while at brunch. On March 16, Stanley departed Florida for Puerto Rico on business, and the family went to Connecticut to visit friends and attend Girl Scout activities.
On the night of March 28, 2008 while returning to the family home near Pittsburgh, PA, our husband, father, son, brother and friend was called home.
Stan leaves behind his loving and devoted wife and friend of 23 years, Velvet Valerie Mickens, children Teran Michelle Mickens and Tevin Michael Mickens of the home; his mother and father, Mr. and Mrs. Israel Mickens of Columbia, S.C.; a sister, Ms. Keisha Mickens, brother Mr. Kim Mickens, both of Elmont, NY, a sister Ms. Sharee Mickens of Columbia, S.C; paternal grandmother, Mrs. Thomasina Mickens of Laurelton, NY; aunts Rosa Carr of Laurelton, NY, Maggie Sally and Naomi Wilson of Columbia, S.C., Florence Sykes and Helen Boyd of New York; uncle Ernest Green of New York and a host of relatives, friends and colleagues.
Be thou at rest. Job well done.

Chaplain Wackenhaten, Officiating.

Interment will be at the West Point Cemetery in West Point, New York.
