Reverend Willie Blanche Jenkins, 97 a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY and a member of Second Baptist Church for sixty-one years entered into eternal rest on Friday, March 14, 2008 at her home, 24 Glenwood Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY.

Reverend Jenkins was born February 28, 1911 in Cairo, Georgia the youngest of five siblings to Willie and David Norwood. She confessed Christ at an early age. Her education was received in Georgia, Washington, DC, New Jersey and New York City School System. She graduated from the Nannie Burroughs Professional School for Women. Her religious studies included the Southern Baptist Seminary in New York City. She was ordained in the Gospel Ministry by her late husband, Reverend Dr. Thomas J. Jenkins, October 10, 1982.

Reverend Sister Jenkins was predeceased by her husband, the late Reverend Dr. Thomas J. Jenkins, December, 1983. two step-sons, John and Thomas Jenkins, a step-daughter, Gloria, three brothers, Matthew Norwood, Elder William H. Norwood and Tommy Norwood, one sister, Ruby Moore.

She leaves to cherish her memories one daughter, Ollie Mae Epps; and a grandson, Ronald David Moore of Poughkeepsie, NY; two half-brothers, John D. Norwood, Miami, Florida; and Benjamin Norwood, Newark, NJ. devoted nieces; Elizabeth Wheeler, Adrianne Wheeler and Lydia Hall; a devoted god-daughter, Marjorie Littlefield (Susie) several nephews, cousins, and friends as well as a community of people, both young and old who called her mother Jenkins.

Reverend Jenkins stressed education to all young people. She maintained an active interest in the spiritual life of her church and was very supportive of her pastor, Reverend Robert L. Bruce, Sr. and the church’s program which she demonstrated by her untiring service rendered.

Reverend Jenkins was active in the Missionary; Convention; Floral; Daughters; Church School; Youth; Pastor’s Aid; Ministries; as well as the Sick Visitation Ministry/Tuesday Evening Bible Study and Prayer Service of Second Baptist Church. She held memberships in several organizations on the local, state and national level. She was a charter member for the Mount Zion Missionary Baptist Association in which she was honored at a Banquet as its oldest active member. She held many offices in the MZMBA; also she was cited and honored in 2005 by the Hudson Valley Interfaith Social Action Committee as a living legend and the oldest practicing female minister in Dutchess County. She was a foster parent for over 25 years.

Reverend Jenkins received numerous letters of achievements, awards, diplomas, plaques and certificates from various organizations on the local, state and national levels of which she said little. This tall, regal woman of God, leader among leaders, a spiritual advisor who was firmly grounded in the word, leaves a legacy of services rendered.

Interment will be 9:00am on Monday March 24, 2008 at Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery in Poughkeepsie, New York.
