| | | Herbert Otto Stiefel, 92, of Burlington, died at 1:40 p.m. Monday, May 18, 2009, at Great River Medical Center-Klein Center in Burlington.
Born December 2, 1916, in Burlington, he was the son of Otto and Lydia Wallentine Stiefel.
Mr. Stiefel worked at Northwestern Cabinet Co. in Burlington for five years and 25 years as a railway mail clerk out of Chicago on the Burlington Route to Omaha. He worked several years on the San Francisco Railroad to Kansas City and 15 years at the Burlington Post Office. He served four years in the Army during World War II stationed at Kodiak, Alaska, Attu, Shemya on the western Aleutian Islands.
He enjoyed and participated in all sports, especially Burlington Bees baseball. He enjoyed reading history and biographies and traveling.
He was a member of Eagles, Retired Federal Employees, Iowa Wesleyan College Centurion Club, Brady Gun Control, Population Institute of Washington, D.C. and Nature Conservancy of Washington, D.C.
He was affiliated with First United Methodist Church.
Survivors include one sister, Verda Peterson of Johnston, IA; nephew, Fred Stiefel of Victor, IA (son of his brother, Carl); nephews, Steve Peterson of San Diego, CA, and David Peterson of Urbandale, IA (sons of his sister, Verda); and his close friend of many years, Dorothy Thompson Davis of Burlington, IA.
He was preceded in death by his parents and one brother.
No formal visitation is planned. Cremation has been accorded.
The Memorial Service for Mr. Stiefel will be at 10 a.m. Friday, May 22, 2009, at Prugh’s Chapel in Burlington with the Rev. Mike Orthel
officiating. Burial will be in Aspen Grove Cemetery in Burlington.
Memorials have been established for First United Methodist Church, St.
Jude Children’s Research Hospital, Memphis, TN, and Homeless Shelter
of Burlington.
