Once a commonly used material in the manufacturing of caskets and many other types of products, elm has become more scarce due to Dutch elm disease, which has sharply limited supplies of the wood. Elm is moderately heavy and hard, but somewhat weak. The color ranges from grayish white sapwood to light brown to brown with a reddish tinge, and the wood is straight-grained with a sometimes interlocked grain and a coarse texture.
