Louis Russell Bennett, 71, of Creston, Iowa died February 22, 2009, at Iowa Methodist Medical Center in Des Moines.

Services will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, February 25, 2009 at the Cromwell United Church of Christ. Pastor Dan Moore and Pastor Ken Reiter will officiate. Burial will be in Maple Hill Cemetery, near Cromwell. Open visitation will be 2 to 9:00 p.m. Tuesday, with family receiving friends from 7 to 9:00 p.m., at Powers Funeral Home near the junction of highways 25 and 34 in Creston. Memorials will be made to either the Cromwell Church Action Fund for Community Missions or Creston Dollars for Scholars. Louis Bennett, son of Maudie Blanche (Ramsbottom) and Frances Russell Bennett was born April 17, 1937, in Union County, Ia. He graduated from Cromwell High School in 1954. He graduated from Iowa State University in 1958 with a Bachelor of Science degree in animal husbandry. Louis then went to Drake University and completed his education certificate.

On June 21, 1959, he married Sharon Kay Cheers near Arispe. He began teaching at East Union Schools and farming on a farm south Cromwell. He continued his teaching career in Creston which included serving as principal at Crest Center and Cromwell. After attending schooling he began working as a truck driver for Bar-Nun in Granger from 1990-1996. Louis was an active member of the Cromwell Congregational United Church of Christ, serving as Deacon, Trustee and School Superintendent, Union County Cattlemen’s Association, and the Crest City Masonic Lodge #522. He also was a 4-H leader, Union County Extension Council Member and a Douglas Township Trustee.

Survivors include his wife Sharon Bennett; three daughters: Ann (husband Paul) Johnson of Creston, Ia., Kathy (husband Gary) Bartlett of Tallahassee, Fla. and Rhonda (husband Ward) Maxwell of Murrieta, Calif; a son Alan Bennett of Henderson, Nev. and a brother Larry (wife Marianna) Bennett of Runnels, Ia.; eight grandchildren: Sam, Betsy, Hanna and Emma Johnson, Bennett and Kessler Bartlett, Claire and Camille Maxwell and numerous cousins, nieces, nephews and friends.

Louis was preceded in death by his parents.
