| | | IRETON, IOWA- CORNELIUS VANDEN BERG, 84, of Ireton, Iowa died Wednesday, August 13, 2008 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday at the First Reformed Church in Ireton with Rev. Doug Van Aartsen officiating. Burial will follow in the Pleasant Hill Cemetery with Military Rites by the Bertram American Legion Post #276. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Friday, with the family present from 6 p.m. to 7:30 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home in Ireton is assisting the family. Cornelius Vanden Berg was born July 10, 1924 in Hull, Iowa, the son of Peter J. and Marie (Pedersen) Vanden Berg. He served in World War II from October 1943 to March of 1946 as a gunner mate for the US Navy.
He married Eldora Jauken on October 12, 1945. They made their home in Ireton, Iowa where Cornie worked as a farm laborer and helped his parents in the meat market. He was also employed by Farm Service and Coop Gas and Oil as a tank wagon driver for 20 years, where he retired in 1988.
Cornie served on the Ireton Fire Department, First Reformed Church Consistory, and was a 60 year member of the Bertram American Legion Post #276 in Ireton. He loved to fish, do woodworking, and visit with family and friends.
Survivors include his wife, Eldora; two sons, Clark of Southgate, California and Peter and his wife Karin of Sheldon, Iowa; two daughters and their husbands, Anita and Jim Bushby of Hawarden and Corinne and Delwyn Postma of Ireton; a brother-in-law, Jake Hulshof of Ireton; 12 grandchildren; 16 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents; two sisters, Bessie Eisma and her husband Peter and Mary Ann Hulshof; daughter-in-law, Elizabeth Vanden Berg; and grandson, Kenyon Vanden Berg.
