| | | HAWARDEN, IOWA- WAYNE L. VANDER FEEN , 77, of Hawarden, died Thursday, August 7, 2008 at the Mercy Medical Center in Sioux City.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Monday at Trinity Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Todd Bunge officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at 1 p.m. Sunday, with the family present beginning at 6 p.m. and a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. at the church. The Porter Funeral Home of Hawarden is in charge of arrangements. Wayne LeRoy Vander Feen was born on April 13, 1931 in Sioux County, Iowa to Allen and Rena (Vander Mei) Vander Feen.
He married Shirley Carstensen in 1952. They had three children, Sandra, David, and Teresa. Shirley passed away in 1960.
On September 10, 1961, Wayne married Oina Baack in Ireton, Iowa. They had two more sons, Warren and Evan.
Wayne served in the US Army from 1952-1954, spending part of that time in West Germany. After being discharged, he farmed in rural Sioux County most of his life until he and Oina retired and moved into Hawarden in 1999.
Wayne loved to catfish and was always looking for “the big one.” For many years, he played softball as the third baseman for teams in Hawarden and Ireton. He also enjoyed traveling and exploring new places and attending sporting events where his grandchildren participated. In 1998-1999 he and his wife, Oina, were honored as West Sioux Athletics Fans of the Year.
Survivors include his wife, Oina; two daughters, Sandy Lerdal of Silver City, New Mexico and Teresa Oleson and her husband Rod of Hawarden; three sons, David and his partner Ronda, Warren and his wife Penny, and Evan and his wife Jill all of Hawarden; 15 grandchildren; 23 great-grandchildren; two sisters, Shirley Rehder and her husband George of Hawarden and Beverly Peterson and her husband David of Okoboji, Iowa; brother-in-law, Lloyd Carstensen and his wife Glenda of Sioux City; two sisters-in-law, Donna Carstensen of Sioux City and Pat Tammen of Farmer City, Illinois.
Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, Allen and Rena; one granddaughter, Amanda; and one great-granddaughter, Kalynn.
