| | | Florence L. Berkland, 89, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of rural Inwood, Iowa, died Wednesday, November 1, 2006, at the Good Samaritan Village, Sioux Falls, South Dakota. Funeral services will be at 2 p.m. on Saturday, November 4, 2006, at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church of northwest rural Inwood. Burial will follow at the Our Savior’s Lutheran Church Cemetery. Visitation will be Friday with the family present 7 – 8 p.m. at Our Savior’s Lutheran Church.
Florence was born on January 24, 1917, the youngest of ten children born to Jacob and Oline (Skotheien) Berkland. She was born on the Berkland family farm near Inwood, Iowa, which was homesteaded by her grandparents in 1869. Florence attended country school and graduated from Inwood High School. After high school, she attended Augustana College in Sioux Falls. Florence taught country school and later worked in a bank and offices in Chicago, Sioux Falls, and Minneapolis. After retiring, Florence returned to the family homestead.
She was an active member of Our Savior’s Lutheran Church, Inwood, where she helped make quilts, attended family night suppers and circle, and spent countless hours in fellowship with other members. Florence loved spending time with her family, attending school and church activities with her great nieces and nephews. She spent much of her life caring for the young and elderly members of the family. She enjoyed traveling, family fishing trips, rosemaling, knitting, crocheting and making craft items for her family. She was known for baking Norwegian specialty foods and pies to share with family and friends.
Grateful for sharing her life are her brother-in-law, Trygve Vegge of Luverne, MN; one nephew, Fred Vegge (Sara) of New Brighton, MN; five nieces, Muriel Cooper of Sioux City, IA; Janet Benson (Charles) of Edina, MN; Joan Erickson (Keith) of Luverne, MN; Jean Laudon (Curt) of Luverne, MN; Martha Nelson (Tom) of Sioux Falls, SD; several great nieces and nephews; and great-great nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents, sisters Elma and Alice Berkland, Geneva Roti, and Eunice Vegge, and brothers Simon, Gifford, Lawrence, Samuel, and Marvin.
Florence will be missed and her memory will always live on in the hearts of those who knew and loved her.
