| | | HAWARDEN, IOWA- BETTY BROWN, 85, of Sioux Falls, South Dakota, formerly of Hawarden, died Tuesday, May 30, 2006 at the Edgewood Vista Senior Living Center in Sioux Falls.
Funeral Service will be 10:30 a.m. Friday at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden with Rev. Tim Walker and Rev. Tim Worthington officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery. Visitation will begin at noon Thursday, with a Prayer Service at 7 p.m. followed by visitation with the family until 8:30 p.m. at the United Methodist Church in Hawarden. The Porter Funeral Home is in charge of arrangements.
Betty J. Brown was born November 8, 1920 at Boyden, Iowa, the daughter of Jacob and Jennie (Van Noort) Vande Stowe. She graduated from Rock Valley, Iowa High School and later attended Sioux Empire College in Hawarden, Iowa. Betty married B. Norcross Brown May 7, 1938 at Canton, South Dakota. They lived in Birmingham, Alabama until 1944. Betty lived with her mother in Rock Valley while her husband served in WWII, and on March 1, 1946 she and Norcross moved to Hawarden, Iowa. Together they ran the Hawarden Cleaners until 1957. Betty then worked part time for many years at the Smart Shop clothing store.
Norcross died August 30, 2003.
Betty was a faithful member of the Hawarden United Methodist Church where she was active in the UMW and the church choir. She was a member of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary and enjoyed her membership in bridge groups. Betty was very devoted to her husband and family and enjoyed cooking for others and sharing cookies and flowers.
She is survived by a son, Benjamin Norcross, Jr. “Bud” Brown of Sioux Falls, South Dakota; a daughter, Rebecca Jane “Becky” Treiber and her husband Ron of Alcester, South Dakota; a sister-in-law, Pauline Vande Stowe of Golden, Colorado; 4 grandchildren and their spouses, Jeff Brown and Shelley of Alcester, Jennifer Ehde and Tim of Edina, Minnesota, Brian Treiber and Terri of Alcester and Tricia Diefendorf and Tom of Beresford, South Dakota; 8 great-grandchildren; and nieces and nephews.
Betty was preceded in death by her parents; husband; 4 brothers, Donald, Milton, Jack and Charles Vande Stowe; and a sister-in-law, Glory Vande Stowe.
