HAWARDEN, IOWA- MARGE ANN (VELGERSDYK) ABBOTT, 84 of Hawarden, Iowa died Monday, January 9, 2006 at the Hillcrest Health Care Center in Hawarden.
Funeral Service will be 2:00 p.m. Thursday at the American Lutheran Church in Hawarden with Rev. Jeff Swanson officiating. Burial will follow in the Grace Hill Cemetery at Hawarden. Visitation will begin at noon on Wednesday with the family present from 7:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. Wednesday at the Porter Funeral Home in Hawarden.
Marge Ann (Velgersdyk) Abbott was born November 18, 1921 on a farm southeast of Inwood, Iowa, the daughter of Nicholas and Minnie (Claussen) Velgersdyk. Her family moved to Rock Valley, Iowa and then to Hawarden, Iowa in 1935. Marge attended school in Hawarden.
She married Curtis Carlson on August 14, 1940 at Hawarden. Two children were born to this union, Virgil and Verlys. Marge began working as a sales clerk at the Lee Store in 1948. She later married George Abbott on April 21, 1950 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota. A son, Roger was born to this marriage. In 1949 Marge started to work at Younie’s Market, which she did for a number of years. She later was an Avon representative and for ten years beginning in 1971 she was the Hawarden news reporter for KVDB radio.
George died on June 20, 2001. Since December of 1997, Marge has be a resident of Hillcrest Health Care Center.
She was a lifetime member of the VFW Auxiliary, a member of the Hawarden Hospital Auxiliary and the American Lutheran Church. She enjoyed spending time with her family, traveling, bingo and country music.
Marge is survived by three children, Virgil Carlson and wife Judy of Canton, South Dakota, Verlys Sandahl and husband Chuck of Hawarden and Roger Abbott and wife Jane of Clarion, Iowa; three sisters, Gladys Edmunds of Hawarden, Myva Larson and husband Gilmore of Hawarden and Donna Obbink and husband John of Sioux Center, Iowa; 8 grandchildren; 18 great-grandchildren; 1 great-great-grandson; nephews and nieces.
She was preceded in death by her parents; 2 brothers, Clarence and Elden; husband, George and brother-in-law, William Edmunds.
